Dr. Wolfgang Ritschel, Professor Emeritus of Pharmacokinetics and Biopharmaceutics at the University of Cincinnati Winkle College of Pharmacy and Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at the College of Medicine, died February 23 after a long struggle with cancer. Dr. Ritschel came to the University of Cincinnati in 1968, after teaching at universities in Austria, Switzerland, and Bangladesh. He received doctorate degrees in philosophy and pharmacology from the University of Vienna and the University of Strasbourg, respectively; followed by a doctorate degree in medicine and a master’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Innsbruck. At the University of Cincinnati, he was internationally renowned for his scientific contributions in pharmacokinetics, a discipline that studies the distribution and disposition of drugs in the human body. He trained over 100 Ph.D. and Masters students, published over 450 papers in scientific journals, and authored 12 textbooks. His pioneering “Handbook of Basic Pharmacokinetics” is now in its 7th edition and was translated into Chinese and Japanese, and will soon be available in Arabic. He received numerous scientific honors, including two Fulbright Senior Scholarships to study the effects of high altitude in the Andes Mountains on drug therapy, the Austrian Cross of Honor for Sciences, and induction into the Royal Academy of Spain for his scientific accomplishments. With his lifelong interest in art and formal art studies in his youth, Ritschel dedicated his retirement to the pursuit of painting and sculpture after leaving the university in 1997. He never stopped painting throughout his medical career, always pursuing new subjects and motifs, especilly on his numerous worldwide travels. Dr. Ritschel was indeed a true “Renaissance Man” with remarkable career accomplishments in science and art. His paintings have had over 60 solo shows in the U.S., Europe, and South America; and over 290 group showings around the world. Museums, corporations, and private collectors have added his works to their collections. His artwork includes unique assembly sculptures of medical, and scientific themes using of discarded stainless-steel medical instruments and stained-glass elements. In addition to his wife, Ingrid, Dr. Ritschel is survived by his brother Karl-Heinz Ritschel; by his son Alexander and wife Paula, and their two children Paxton and Paul; daughter Barbara Knollmann-Ritschel and her husband Björn, and their two children Felix and Florian; and by his step-daughter, Margaret Ahmad The family plans to hold a mass and memorial services at the Annunciation Church in Clifton, 3547 Clifton Ave.,(Corner Resor Ave.) at noon , Saturday, February 27th. There will be a reception in the Father Klug Center of the Annunciation Church at 1:30 p.m.
